About 30 people danced in the sun on Tauranga’s waterfront at lunchtime today as part of a global campaign against violence towards women held to coincide with Valentine’s Day. Co-organiser Jody Hopkinson wanted to get involved in the ‘One Billion Rising’ campaign, with 30 minutes of spontaneous dance on the Edgewater Fan.

“We thought it would be great to give people a chance to rise up and dance and sing and say ‘enough!’ We are lucky that we live in the country that we do, but there is still a lot of violence against women in New Zealand.”Jody, who had organised the event with friend Gisela de Hollanda, was delighted with the response saying she would have been happy to have only had two people dancing. “It’s great to see all the people here. We are definitely going to make it an annual event.”The `One Billion Rising’ campaign involved thousands of activities in 190 countries. The campaign is named after United Nations statistics showed one billion women in the world are raped or beaten in their lifetime.
